What is AFL Line Betting?

Line betting (also called handicap betting) gives the underdog a virtual head start. A line of -15.5 for the favourite means they must win by 16 points or more for your bet to win. The underdog at +15.5 wins your bet if they lose by 15 points or less, or win outright.

This is the most popular alternative to head-to-head betting because it creates value in games where the favourite is very short. Instead of backing Geelong at $1.20 to win, you can back them -15.5 at $1.90 — much better value if you think they'll win comfortably.

Key Factors in Line Betting

Home Ground Advantage

Home teams typically perform better than the line suggests. The Gabba, Kardinia Park and Optus Stadium are particularly strong home grounds. Backing the home team to cover the line at these venues has historically been profitable.

Interstate Travel

Teams travelling from Perth to Melbourne (or vice versa) struggle to cover lines in the first game of their trip. The travel factor is real and bookmakers sometimes under-adjust for it.

Weather Conditions

Wet weather favours the underdog and makes covering big lines harder. Check forecasts before committing to a line bet. In slippery conditions, games tend to be lower scoring and closer.

Margin Betting (Exact Winning Margins)

Margin betting lets you bet on the exact winning margin range — 1-9 points, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+. These markets offer much higher odds but are harder to predict. The sweet spot is usually the 20-29 or 30-39 point margins for strong favourites at home.
